Embracing Your Sovereignty

As sovereign beings, we get the freedom of choice within our hearts and our minds. We get to decide what energy we allow into our space, what thoughts we entertain, and how we respond to life’s challenges. We get to choose what aligns with our highest good-and just as importantly, what does not.

But let’s be real: life isn’t always smooth sailing. Emotions will arise that demand our attention. It’s in these moments that our power is truly tested. Will we bottle them up and suppress these feelings? Will we lash out and make it everyone else’s problem? Or will we bring these feelings into our awareness, allowing them to be noticed, felt, and processed?

When we avoid our emotions, they don’t just disappear. Instead, they find refuge within our physical bodies, storing themselves in ways that manifest as tension, illness, and even chronic pain. Think of your emotions as energy in motion; if we block their flow, they stagnate, creating energetic and physical blockages.

On the other hand, when we embrace the fullness of our feelings, we invite healing into our lives. When we cry, scream, or laugh uncontrollably, we release. This clears the path for fresh energy, allowing us to move forward lighter, freer, and more aligned with our true essence.

Processing our emotions doesn’t mean we surrender our power to them - it is where we reclaim our sovereignty. By acknowledging the existence of these energies and then choosing to let them go, we remind ourselves of our own authority.

Imagine standing tall in your own energetic field, unbothered by external forces. This doesn’t mean life won’t challenge you - it will - but it does mean you have the tools to handle how it affects you. Your sovereignty is your compass, guiding you to respond with grace rather than react from fear.

Tools to honor your emotions and your free will:

Pause and breathe to reground:

  • When you notice intense feelings stirring - give yourself a moment to pause. Breathe fresh air into your body, maybe close your eyes, and center yourself through your breath.

Identify the emotion(s):

  • Just by naming what’s coming up can help take the edge off its intensity and give the emotion less power over you.

Feel without judgement:

  • Allow yourself your moment! There is no “right” or “wrong” way to feel something. Let the emotion move through you without needing to fix or control anything.

Move your body:

  • Whether it’s yoga, ecstatic dance, moving meditations, walking outside, or simply shaking your hands, movement helps release stagnant energy in the body.

Journal or speak your truth:

  • Write down what’s triggering your emotion(s), what’s causing these energies to stir within you. Sit with these recognitions for a while until they reduce in severity.

  • When the emotions have passed, and you feel like you have processed and cleared them, lean on your community, trusted friends, spiritual guides or family. You’re not meant to navigate this life alone - speak your truth in a healthy and healing way.

Let’s honor ourselves by embracing the truth of our human experience. By allowing our emotions in and consciously releasing them, we free our spirits to shine in alignment with our highest truth.

You are sovereign, you are powerful, and you are free.

“Over himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign.”

- J.S. Mill
